Hopefully you'll find we go over some useful pieces of information in this blog. We're also available via e-mail for questions and help on any topic we talk about.
A couple of days ago we launched a new mobile website, mobile.vivosystems.co.uk to take over the android.vivosystems.co.uk basically because you cover more areas under mobile. The old android.vivosystems.co.uk has been pulled down with all traffic being re-directed to the new domain.
Our Android projects have now been moved here, we plan on adding some iPhone / iPad projects in the future. The website site is still under construction in some areas but will be finished soon.
The mobile site is to focus on mobile software developed by Vivo Systems, it includes things like current and future projects, how we develop software and why, tools, help, feedback etc.
Google have just announced the launch of Navigation in the UK for all Android Operating System versions 1.6 and above. This means that you can now use your Google phone as a turn by turn GPS system, like TomTom, Garmin etc.
The release of Navigation in the US and in the UK is a bold strategic move by Google which will increase sales of Android phones as people will start to think all I need now is a phone, I don't need a dedicated GPS for navigation. Let's face it, this way you would also always have your GPS navigation on you. Why pay for two devices when one will do? In many cases, the Google Android Navigation will do the job better than the decicated device.
We've been using the Google Navigation application for the last day to give it a try, we've been using it on the Google Nexus One phone and the older HTC Magic and they both work as you would expect, but better. For instance, you don't have the flat colour maps any more, the images are powered by the Google Maps application making use of Google's vast images of the UK. You have the classic view from behind the vehicle which uses real images of the location, you can even use Google Street View for the images with turn by turn navigation so you know exactly where you're turning and more.
One of the big features is, for a journey from A to B, the navigation application caches the map tiles for the journey, so if you go out of network coverage, you'll still be able to view the map on your phone. This is great news as it was one of my original concerns with the navigation application.
We've just purchased a couple of the Google Car Docks for the Nexus One to see how they fair so we'll be reporting back on them soon, but so far so good.
Thanks to Blogger stopping support for FTP on their blog engine, we decided that ours had become a little dependant on services from a third party, so we decided to build our own simple blog, and here it is.
Please e-mail us if you link to our old blog eateries and have problems, we've tried to maintain the old links so most of them should work, but e-mail info@vivosytstems.co.uk if you have any problems.
Thanks,
Philip Elson
